Ellen Wyatt is the assistant manager at Cannabis LLC, a recreational marijuana dispensary located in the Eugene / Springfield, Oregon area. They offer a wide variety o locally grown strains, high CBD options included along with tinctures, transdermal patches, clones, and topicals.
We chatted with Ellen about what a typical day looks like for the assistant manager of a busy dispensary.
How Long Have You Been in the Cannabis Industry and What Attracted You to It?
Almost 2 years at Cannabis, LLC. I was lucky enough to get in before the OLCC took over.
What Do You Do and Why?
I began as a receptionist and worked my way up to bud tending and then to shift leading. Right now I’m an assistant manager, and I keep track of A LOT of numbers. I do it because of the incredible team and product I get to work with.
What Were Some of the Challenges You’ve Faced Getting Here?
The entire process has been a challenge. Mostly because I did not begin in the black market. The legalities have been the most challenging part because of the difficult language used to write cannabis laws.
What Is the Thing That Gets You Out of Bed in the Morning?
Being part of something WAY bigger than me is what keeps me motivated. I love being a tough, durable fiber in the gorgeous fabric I’m part of. I love the people I work with and would have quit a long time ago if I didn’t genuinely enjoy the people aspect of my job.
“I love being a tough, durable fiber in the gorgeous fabric I’m part of.”
— ELLEN WYATT
What Keeps You up at Night?
Money. Inaccuracies in the small details. The future of the industry via politics. Setting a good example and fighting the “stupid stoner” stigma.
How Has Your Job Affected Your Personal Relationships?
Exercising my accountability at work has actually strengthened my relationships and filtered out fair-weather friends. It’s helped me balance my life and plan for the future.
What Does a Typical Day for You Look Like?
Rise and shine – coffee – breakfast – METRC reporting. Balancing the previous day’s books, making sure vendor payouts are ready. In-taking products, answering coworker questions, answering emails, inventory organization, and auditing.
In What Ways Is Your Job Most Rewarding?
I get to exercise my brain every day, which is important if I want to stay sharp AND I get to smoke weed daily.
If You Could Go Back in Time to When You First Started, What Advice Would You Give Yourself?
Don’t doubt your abilities. Even if you fail, you tried. “This thing we call failure is not falling down, but staying down”.
What Advice Would You Give Women in the Industry/Interested in Getting Involved in the Industry?
If you have a calm, collected temperament, it shows. This industry is not for anyone, not just women, who get stressed out easily. The workforce benefits greatly from female leadership, and I encourage women to not just get their foot in the door but to try out for larger roles.
